Course Description

The times they are a-changin'. Tax rates appear to be on the long-term increase. Tax planning’s main objective is keeping tax rates at their lowest possible level over time. The time is now to accomplish this. There is a window today to convert from a traditional IRA to a Roth—and it’s closing very soon. In this course, you’ll learn how to prevent increasing tax rates (and other proposed changes) from seriously damaging the value of a retirement nest egg. A Roth conversion is a personal decision that requires attention to a client’s specific circumstances.

Learning Objectives:

  • Summarize the Roth conversion evaluation process

  • Recognize the impact of proposed legislation on IRAs

  • Outline how the SECURE Act’s 10-year rule decimates most estate plans

  • Identify how most IRA trusts don’t work anymore

  • Recall benefits and pitfalls of a Roth conversion

  • Determine income tax on conversions

  • Determine Roth IRA estate planning/estate tax advantages now and later

  • Summarize the beauty of no income tax at retirement

  • Identify how to avoid paying too much tax on a Roth conversion

  • Recall the permanent nature of a Roth conversion

  • Give examples of IRA conversion myths
